Canine VACCINATION RECOMMENDATIONS
BELOW ARE RESOURCES EXPLAINING THE CORE VACCINATIONS AND RISK-BASED VACCINATIONS FOR Working Dogs Such as Livestock Guardian Dogs, Herding Dogs, or Hunting DOgs
The link above from AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) provides detailed information as well as recommended timelines for vaccination protocols. West Fork Veterinary’s protocol that we use on our own Livestock Guardian Dogs and Herding dogs is DAPP vaccination at 6, 8, and 12 weeks. Usually we sell the puppies between 8 and 10 weeks. At 12 and 16 weeks of age the puppies should receive Lyme and Lepto vaccines in addition to Rabies at 16 weeks. All vaccines should be boostered annually unless you can get on a 3 year Rabies protocol.
Core Vaccinations:
Distemper
Canine Hepatitis (Adenovirus)
Canine Parvovirus
Rabies
Risk-Based Vaccinations:
Bordetella bronchiseptica
Not necessary for dogs in relative isolation but recommended for dogs that may interact with other dogs or travel.
Borrelia Burgdorferi (Lyme Disease)
Vaccination against Lyme Disease, spread by ticks.
Leptospira bacteria
Vaccination against disease caused by bacteria found in water or wet soil.
Parainfluenza
Non-core, but commonly included in core vaccinations.
*It is strongly recommended that any dog that spends substantial time outside in our region be vaccinated against Lyme Disease and Leptospirosis.
